Slow Start to Surface, Windows 8?

  • PDF

According to supply chain sources Surface tablet sales remain fairly slow-- DigiTimes claims Microsoft has already cut tablet orders for the year by half.

SurfaceThe Taiwanese news site says Surface orders are now 2 million units (down from 4m) as "sources from the upstream supply chain believe [Windows 8] may not perform as well as expected in the market."

Demand is also not too hot for Windows 8 tablets from Asus, Samsung and Dell the site reports.

The Digitimes sources also say Microsoft considers spurring demand through price cuts-- even such actions will only make its PC maker partners-turned-rivals even less happy.

Let's not forget how Acer is already not too jolly about the Surface...

Meanwhile Asus CFO David Chang tells the Wall Street Journal "demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now." Chang says demand ramp-up for Windows 8 touch notebooks is slow, even if he declines to mention actual sales figures. Asus currently offers one Windows 8 touch-capable notebook, the 11.6-inch Vivobook.

Such news follow the recent sales figures from Microsoft saying Windows 8 licenses since the end October 2012 launch total 40m. However the company does not provide any Surface sales figures.

Record Kindle Sales on Black Friday

  • PDF

Amazon sells a record amount of Kindle devices as it introduces Black Friday in the EU-- Kindle sales from Amazon.co.uk were "more than three times higher" on 23 November than the previous record.

Kindle FireKeep in mind Amazon fails to provide hard sales numbers, giving only statements like " Black Friday was the biggest sales day ever for the Kindle Family" and "Kindle Fire [was] the bestselling product across all of Amazon.co.uk on Black Friday."

During 23-26 November the Kindle Fire cost £99, down from the usual £129.

"Black Friday" is the ominously named US post-Thanksgiving retail tradition slowly creeping towards the continent. Amazon UK holds Black Friday since 2010, and 2012 also sees the date taking place in France and Germany, with special offers aimed at driving Christmas sales.

Following Black Friday is Cyber Monday, a further date for lightning deals taking place on online shopping sites.

Democracy, via Surface

The American election might have come and gone, but not before an interesting piece of news came to our attention-- a Microsoft Surface tablet found use as a voting machine in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Surface electionPart of a test by electronic balloting company Democracy Live, the tablet runs "LiveBallot," a cloud-based browser application built the Microsoft Windows Azure platform.

LiveBallot allows voters to access, mark and print a ballot, before printing out results for counting by a separate machine.

The Surface makes something of a change in the world of voting machines, many of which are older machines running on 486x processors. The tablet even has built-in screen reading capability, while USB support allows sip-and-puff input devices for disabled voters.

Due to security concerns, the Surface was not used as an actual voting machine-- but the test might be something of a glimpse of the future, at least when it comes to the democratic process.
