Samsung Galaxy S5 Gets Mini Sibling

Galaxy S5 miniSamsung announces the Galaxy S5 mini-- a smaller version of its flagship smartphone featuring most of its bigger sibling's features, including the fitness sensors and device protection features.

It has a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display (the on in the regular S5 is 5.1-inch) and carries a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (expandable to 64GB), 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2100mAh battery inside IP67-certified casing.

The OS of choice is Android 4.4, and a heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and connectivity with Samsung wearable devices are included.

Nokia Outs Fourth Android Handset

Nokia X2Microsoft launches a fourth Android smartphone-- the Nokia X2, a followup to the Nokia X lineup featuring a 4.3-inch ClearBlack display covered with a translucent outer layer.

Inside the device are a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage (expandable to up to 32GB via microSD), 5MP rear-facing camera and a removable 1800mAh battery.

Amazon (Finally) Reveals Fire Phone

After much rumour and hearsay Amazon unveils its first attempt at smartphones-- the Fire Phone, a 4.7-inch number featuring a glasses-free 3D display of sorts… and a means of encouraging customer showrooming.

Amazon PhoneThe holographic display uses 4 face-tracking cameras (one in each corner of the device) and a "Dynamic Perspective" sensor to provide images with depth. The system also powers some interesting UI tricks, as one can simply tilt the device to scroll through websites or navigate between menus.

However the Fire Phone's most touted feature is not actually hardware-based. With the press of a dedicated button customers can use the smartphone's 13MP camera to identify text, barcodes and QR codes, as well as movies, TV shows, songs, and a bevy of products of the household, books and games variety.

Samsung Intros First Tizen Smartphone

Samsung launches a first-- the Samsung Z, the first commercially available smartphone running on Tizen, the Samsung-Intel collaboration in open-source Linux-based operating systems.

Samsung ZA 4.8-inch device with a 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display, the Samsung Z carries 2.3 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, LTE, 8MP rear-facing caera, heartrate sensor and a fingerprint scanner within a "slim, angular design."

As for the operating system Samsung promises a "distinctive home and application layout," if one familiar to Galaxy device users.

Sony Goes Mid-Tier With Xperia Z2

Xperia T3Sony announces a mid-tier addition to the Xperia smartphone family-- the Xperia T3, a 5.3-inch number claiming to be the slimmest device within that specific size category with thickness clocking at 7mm.

It features construction in "premium" materials, namely a stainless steel frame and "matte material" backing in white, black or purple.

Inside are a 1280 x 720 Triluminos display, quad-core 1.4GHz CPU, LTE connectivity, 2500mAH battery and an 8MP Exmore RS rear-facing camera, as well as a selection of pre-installed social and camera apps.
