Samsung Teases Foldable Phone Concept

Samsung uses its 2019 developer concept to tease a foldable phone concept-- one using a flexible display to take on the flip phone, making a device users can fold in half.

“This brand-new form factor that we’re now exploring will not only easily fit in your pocket, but it also changes the way you use your phone,” head of framework R&D group Hyesoon Jeong says at the Samsung Developer Conference. He also says the concept sets to make foldable technology "more compact," as well as extend it to new form factors.

The Korean giant does not detail the technology behind the concept device, never mind tell whether it will be actually available. However it does use it to show off upcoming refinements to One UI, the co-development effort with Android for use with foldable devices. Dubbed One UI 2, it allows for improved one-handed use, more glanceable information and "more vibrant hues" throughout the OS, making it a more slick version of the UI found in the Galaxy Fold.

While the Galaxy Fold proved to have something of a flawed launch, Samsung is clearly not ready to give up on the foldable format. As such, we can only wait what for what the company has in store, particularly as Motorola is reportedly set to reveal an update on the classic Razr handset featuring a similarly foldable form factor.
