According to Calacalist, Apple will no longer use Intel wifi and Bluetooth components in iPhones come 2020, leading to Chipzilla stopping work on the components internally dubbed "Sunny Peak."
Supposed Intel communications seen by Calcalist describe Apple as a "key mobile customer" and "main volume driver" for Sunny Peak. However, with Apple no longer buying the product, Intel is said to be redirecting the development team on other efforts. It is not clear why Apple is dropping the Intel components, but the news website points out the "many factors" involved in the "massive effort" to launch a 5G-capable iPhone
As one might imagine, Apple has no comment on the story. Intel does have an official statement, which reads "Intel’s 5G customer engagements and roadmap have not changed for 2018 through 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects.” In addition, Intel says "every aspect of the cellular communication system is changing to deliver the major improvements in speed, latency, and reliability, with 5G."
Who will make the mobile router inside the 2020 iPhone? Currently no one can really tell, but a June 2018 Bloomberg story suggests Apple will be using the services of modem maker MediaTek.
