Sony Shrinks Digital Paper Tablet

Last year Sony announced the DPT-RP1, a 13.3-inch tablet with an ePaper display users could write or draw on with a stylus. Now the company presents the DPT-CP1, a smaller 10.3-inch version.

DPT-CP1A prime example of "Sony weird," the DPT-CP1 allows one to create documents and annotate PDF documents, with 16GB of storage customers can share with iOS, Android, Windows and Mac devices via companion app. The ePaper displays offers 1404 x 1872 resolution and 16 greyscale levels, and Sony says the device lasts around 1 month on a single charge.

HP Presents Detachable Chromebook x2

HP is the second company to launch a ChromeOS-powered tablet-- the Chromebook x2 is a 12.3-inch notebook with a detachable keyboard allowing for tablet-style touchscreen use.

It runs on a 7th generation Intel Core-Y processor together with 4/8GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable via microSD slot) and battery promising up to 10.5 hours of use ona  single charge. The display is a Gorilla Glass 4-clad IPS WLED number able to handle 2400x1600 resolution together with stylus support. Connectivity comes through x2 USB-C ports and headphone jack.

Apple Educates With "Affordable" iPad

The March 2018 Apple event was all about education, as seen with the launch of a new 9.7-inch iPad with Apple Pencil support and a lower price tag, as well as a classroom management app dubbed Schoolwork.

education iPad The education-focused iPad is very similar to the regular iPad, even if the addition of Pencil support does merit some attention-- after all, the stylus was previously limited to the iPad Pro. Further iPad features include the A10 Fusion chip (the iPad Pro has the A10X), 32GB storage, 8MP rear-facing camera, HD FaceTime camera, compass, GPS and 10 hour battery life. For customers wanting to connect to the internet on the go an LTE version will also be available.

A Foldable iPhone for 2020?

A Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst claims the iPhone of the near future will feature a radical redesign, CNBC reports-- Apple is supposedly  working with Asian partners on a foldable smartphone.

bendy phone"We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past," analyst Wamsi Mohan  says. "Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020."

In other words, the iPhone for 2020 might be a device with a big iPad-style display one can fold into something iPhone-sized-- a "pholder," if one is up for unlikely device category names. Companies such as Lenovo and Samsung have worked on such devices, but so far none of them have made it further than the prototype stage.

HMD Brings Nokia Matrix Phone Back

Nearly 20 years ago, the Wachowski siblings wowed the world with The Matrix, the seminal science fiction film starring Keanu Reeves and, in a small yet critical role, the Nokia 8110. And now it's back at MWC 2018, as HMD announces a 4G update of the "banana" phone.

Nokia 8110Released back in 1996, the 8110 was, of course, most famous for the spring-loaded slider-- it is the chief reason it was Neo's phone of choice, after all (that, and Nokia was the biggest phone maker at the time). The 2018 update retains the mechanism, as well as the bright yellow colour that garnered it the "banana" nickname. The black colour seen in The Matrix remains an option, though.
