The Microsoft October event is all about the Surface hardware updates, as the Windows developer presents the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2 and a pair of Cortana-enabled headphones dubbed the Surface Headphones.

Samsung Teases Foldable Phone

Rumours involving a foldable smartphone from Samsung have been swirling around for what feels like an age, but 2018 might be the year when the company delivers on the promise, at least according to Samsung mobile business head DJ Koh.

Samsung foldable phoneIn an interview with CNBC, Koh says "it's time to deliver" on the promise of a foldable device, since surveys conducted by the company reveal customers are interested in such a device. However actual details are hard to come by, outside of a hint the device might be unveiled at the November 2018 Samsung Developer Conference.

"You can use most of the uses... on foldable status. But when you need to browse or see something, then you may need to unfold it. But even unfolded, what kind of benefit does that give compared to the tablet? If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they (consumers) buy it?," Koh tells CNBC. "So every device, every feature, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) "wow, this is the reason Samsung made it.""

Strong Results for Apple in Q3 2018

Apple continues making headway into becoming a $1 trillion company, with revenues growing by 17% Y-o-Y to reach $53.3 billion, leading to profits worth $11.5bn, even during the traditionally slow fiscal Q3 2018 (ending June 2018).

Apple Drops Intel Modems for Future iPhones?

According to Calacalist, Apple will no longer use Intel wifi and Bluetooth components in iPhones come 2020, leading to Chipzilla stopping work on the components internally dubbed "Sunny Peak."

iPhone AppleSupposed Intel communications seen by Calcalist describe Apple as a "key mobile customer" and "main volume driver" for Sunny Peak. However, with Apple no longer buying the product, Intel is said to be redirecting the development team on other efforts. It is not clear why Apple is dropping the Intel components, but the news website points out the "many factors" involved in the "massive effort" to launch a 5G-capable iPhone

Apple and Samsung Give Peace a Chance

The biggest patent battle in the tech industry has come to an end-- Apple and Samsung resolve the last of a string of lawsuits spanning 4 continents, Bloomberg reports. The terms behind the agreement are not available.

Samsung AppleThe legal disputes started in 2011, after the late Steve Jobs vowed to go "thermonuclear" on Android-based iPhone rivals. The ensuing Smartphone War involved every major industry player, but the harshest battles involved Samsung. Apple insisted the S. Korean giant "slavishly" copied the iPhone design, while at one point a Samsung lawyer described Apple as a "jihadist."
