Huawei Shows Off Fast Charging

Huawei claims to have a no-compromise means to quickly charge smartphone batteries-- one promising to charge a 3000mAh battery to half capacity in just 5 minutes without damaging the battery in question.

Huawei battery experiment An even faster (if much smaller, capacity-wise) 600mAh prototype battery reaches 68% after all of 2 minutes of charging.

Current fast charging solutions actually damage battery capacity or long-term longevity. Huawei says the prototypes avoid such issues through the use of graphite-coated anodes alongside the lithium ion chemistry used in current mobile device batteries.

Admittedly the prototypes are still at very early stages, being too bulky to fit inside a smartphones and requiring a special charger to actually, well, charge.

Huawei adds the batters have went through repeated charging, and as such the fast charging is not a one-time deal. But will it implement the technology in future mobile phone batteries? Only time will tell, of course.
